You can imagine my surprise when reading the latest edition of Country Living (March 2011), I came across a craft in their “Idea Notebook” that involved jewelry making — with Shrinky Dinks! I forgot all about this stuff, but recall it really being popular when I was a kid. Thanks to Cathe Holden of Just Something I Made, I may have a new obsession.
If you know me at all, you know the wheels started turning immediately. I’ve used “clay” products before like Sculpey. I crafted the heart pendant on our wedding favor wine bottle candles with Sculpey. But after reading the CL How-To, I could immediately see the freedom in using a medium like Shrinky Dink paired with favorite images (personal photos, vintage prints, ads, logos). One could create jewelry, keychains, ornaments, “artwork” for my dollhouse, napkin holders and other entertaining decor like markers for place-settings, wineglasses and cheese — the possibilities are endless. I can hardly contain myself now as I write!
I’m going to get right on this one shortly (as soon as supplies come in) — I’ve got some of those wine bottle candles left over so will attempt to make new wine markers for those, and perhaps a few other items. And if successful? I’ll take requests! If you’ve got a special occasion or event coming up, I can see some very unique and personal favors being possible.
Check back soon!
How fun to read your post! I can hardly wait to see what you come up with first. I added a promotional code to the Shrinky Dinks post on my blog today that you can use to get a free gift from the company if you order anything at all from their website. It’s their way of showing thanks for the CL feature by sending gifts to my readers. How awesome is that?! Thanks for the nice mention!!
